Fallback options can be defined as a backup option reverted to when a primary option fails to make contact.
They are set up to create an alternate contact route when users find themselves in situations where they do not have access or connectivity to their ordinary means of contact.
At Infobip, we refer to fallback options and failovers, which are available for several communication channels when creating your customer comms. Fallback options allow you to decrease your overall delivery fails and conversions as they act as backups.
What is the difference between Fallback and Failover?
Failover and fallback are complementary processes. The failover process switches from a primary option to a backup (recovery) site; then, fallback returns to the original (or new) primary option after the failure of making contact.
How does Fallback work?
Fallback starts when something unexpected happens that we cannot control. It ensures message delivery when there are server-related issues by pushing SMS to Telecom Operators, therefore bypassing the servers. In that way, it is guaranteed that SMS is not delayed because of server issues. Because of bypassing the servers, delivery reports cannot be shown.
